Intellectual dishonesty

Intellectual dishonesty

Recently I’ve read several politically focused articles that use the words “intellectual dishonesty”. I puzzled at the meaning. Is it only used when referring to “intellectuals” being dishonest. Or, is there such a thing as “unintellectual dishonesty”?

But actually, based on feedback from friends and intellectuals and intellectual friends, the consensus seems to be that it means “lying”. If so, then why don’t they just say so?

If the writers won’t call someone a liar ( maybe they fear a charge of libel ) they, instead, accuse them of intellectual dishonesty. Seems somewhat weak and dishonest to me.
